Attention AATI members presently engaged in the teaching of Italian in high school: For 40 years Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana has had a very successful program in the heart of ancient Rome. The program was originally started by the Sister of the Holy Cross as a cultural journey. The study of Italian was soon added as a requirement for study in Rome. Since Italian is only rarely taught in the Midwest from whence come the bulk of our students, we begin with Introductory Italian (2 semesters). Students go Rome during their sophomore year for either the fall or the spring semester, depending on their "major". Some choose to stay for the year. In any event they MUST continue the study of Italian while in Rome although the remainder of their courses may be taken in English (these satisfy the general Education requirements of the college). The courses taught in English are interdisciplinary in that they focus on Italian reality almost exclusively (e.g., Italian art history, archeology, contemporary Italian problems; music appreciation). This pattern of study has made possible a "major" in Italian since they can also take advanced Italian courses toward the major in Italian while in Rome.
